Summary

Mika is not your average orphan—and she’s about to prove it。

It’s 1880, and in the frigid city of Stockholm, death lurks around every corner。 Twelve-year-old Mika knows that everyone in her orphanage will struggle to survive this winter。 But at least the notorious serial killer the Night Raven is finally off the streets…or is he?

Mika is shocked when a newborn baby is left at the orphanage in the middle of the night, by a boy with a cryptic message。 Who is he? And who is this “Dark Angel” he speaks of? When a detective shows up, Mika senses something even more sinister is going on。

Drawn in by Mika’s unique ability to notice small details—a skill Mika has always used to survive—the gruff Detective Hoff unwittingly recruits her to help him with his investigation into a gruesome murder。 Mika knows she should stay far, far away, and yet…with such little hope for her future, could this be an opportunity? Maybe, just maybe, this is Mika’s chance to be someone who matters。

Fantastic mystery This story is set in an 1880s Stockholm world, filled of poverty, death and frigid cold, yet through the complexity of the mystery and the observations of the gifted protagonist, Mika, I was drawn in and I want to read more。

Surprise twist!I was pleasantly surprised with the story line。 Was slightly slow going, but it kept me interested。Set in the 1880's。Mika is a well thought out character and believable。 Valdemar seems to be a sort of down and out cop that is trying to make a better impact on his community by figuring out this serial killer situation。This seems a little dark for a children's novel。 The age level says 10-14 on Amazon but some of the descriptions were semi-graphic and the characters were around dead Surprise twist!I was pleasantly surprised with the story line。 Was slightly slow going, but it kept me interested。Set in the 1880's。Mika is a well thought out character and believable。 Valdemar seems to be a sort of down and out cop that is trying to make a better impact on his community by figuring out this serial killer situation。This seems a little dark for a children's novel。 The age level says 10-14 on Amazon but some of the descriptions were semi-graphic and the characters were around dead bodies a few times。 Maybe I just don't see myself reading this at that age。 But also, maybe their brains are processing it differently at that age? I'm not saying it's inappropriate, just not expected。 Haha。Otherwise, a very entertaining read。 There's some foreshadowing that you may make connections before they are revealed, but the author is good at keeping it suspenseful。 Maybe if parents are letting their 10 year old read they can sit with them to help them understand some of the goings on? That would be my recommendation。 。。。more

This was a free book and I think I got confused what it was about。 I probably wouldn’t have read it if it hadn’t been free。 It was decent, but not at all the genre I thought it would be。 It was sort of a darker, Swedish version of Flavia de Luce, without the laughs。 It also felt fairly anachronistic for 1880 Sweden。I thought it would me a more magical middle grade reader。 It was gritty enough I wouldn’t let my 10 year old read it until he’s a tad older。 Nothing too horrendous, just too dark for This was a free book and I think I got confused what it was about。 I probably wouldn’t have read it if it hadn’t been free。 It was decent, but not at all the genre I thought it would be。 It was sort of a darker, Swedish version of Flavia de Luce, without the laughs。 It also felt fairly anachronistic for 1880 Sweden。I thought it would me a more magical middle grade reader。 It was gritty enough I wouldn’t let my 10 year old read it until he’s a tad older。 Nothing too horrendous, just too dark for him right now。 。。。more

Captivating, not just for YA readershipThe author draws the reader in quickly, with vivid imagery and believable characters that stick in your mind despite yourself。 You actually care about what happens next and are challenged to put the pieces together with the main character- no spoon fed answers and no writers tricks either。 Come, enter this world and discover for yourself - book 2 had better deliver as well!

Short but sweetThere was so much sadness in this book so I just kept reading hoping for a happy ending。 There was a realistically happy ending and that is all we could expect。 I really enjoyed reading about this clever girl and the kind policeman she helped。

might be YA but oldster liked itI was tired of murder mysteries, dystopian stories and romance novels so I chose this from Amazon first reads October。 Might be young adult but at 69 I enjoyed it。 No romance, no supernatural/zombies, just a good story with a bit of unreal added。 Going to purchase the next book, & I am frugal with book purchases, so I think quite well of the writer at this point。

Completely engrossing and it pulled me in from page one so much that I basically read this in one sitting。 I'm not sure that this should be called a 'middle grade' or 'children's' book。。。it is pretty dark。 I'm guessing it is labeled as such since the main character is 12 (although a more mature and well-spoken twelve than I've ever encountered!)。 So don't let that classification scare you off。。。this is definitely a good read for adults as well。 I hope that the remaining books in the series ultim Completely engrossing and it pulled me in from page one so much that I basically read this in one sitting。 I'm not sure that this should be called a 'middle grade' or 'children's' book。。。it is pretty dark。 I'm guessing it is labeled as such since the main character is 12 (although a more mature and well-spoken twelve than I've ever encountered!)。 So don't let that classification scare you off。。。this is definitely a good read for adults as well。 I hope that the remaining books in the series ultimately get translated。 It appears that the next one will come out in English next year but I haven't seen if there are plans to do any more beyond that one。 。。。more

I am never good at mysteries。 This one included, even it being a YA book。

The story per si is good, but I felt disappointed by the end。 I found it to be unfair, and I'm disappointed because I thought Mika, more than anyone, wouldn't be so harsh to judge someone who was doing justice to HER OWN KIND。 Also, did she really think of her requirement as merci? Really?? Because to me, it seems there are worse fates than death。 The story per si is good, but I felt disappointed by the end。 I found it to be unfair, and I'm disappointed because I thought Mika, more than anyone, wouldn't be so harsh to judge someone who was doing justice to HER OWN KIND。 Also, did she really think of her requirement as merci? The Night Raven reviewGreat read。 Mika and her detective friend solve more than one mystery in this fast paced story。 Mike is an orphan with a very special skill set, a much needed asset to solving the Night Raven case。 The story also give much insight into what it is like to truly live in poverty。

Good readGreat details and had a great mix of dark themes with some touches of childhood curiosity。 Wasn't shocked with the resolution of the case, however the way it was handled was very interesting and definitely left me curious for where Mika's story goes next。 Good readGreat details and had a great mix of dark themes with some touches of childhood curiosity。 Wasn't shocked with the resolution of the case, however the way it was handled was very interesting and definitely left me curious for where Mika's story goes next。 。。。more

Quick and interestingA short book but it had a good adventure and good characters。 Reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes in some ways。 The character being a young teen will certainly make it interesting to young people。 Live the setting, and。putting it in the late 1800s is a huge help to the storyline。

An orphan girl searches for a serial killer in Victorian SwedenMika is a twelve year old girl who lives in an orphanage where death is always near, whether by starvation, freezing or casual violence。 An encounter with a policeman leads to her assisting him to catch a serial that is terrorizing the city。 I found Mika to be a believable character, not perfect but very smart。 She has a complicated reason for her actions beyond a simple need for justice that is the consequences of her circumstances。 An orphan girl searches for a serial killer in Victorian SwedenMika is a twelve year old girl who lives in an orphanage where death is always near, whether by starvation, freezing or casual violence。 An encounter with a policeman leads to her assisting him to catch a serial that is terrorizing the city。 I found Mika to be a believable character, not perfect but very smart。 She has a complicated reason for her actions beyond a simple need for justice that is the consequences of her circumstances。 I also want to mention the excellent translation。 The language flowed naturally and smoothly。 。。。more
